I ended up finding the book "Wonder" by R.J.
Palacio after Netflixing the movie by the same name. Wonder is a story about a
10-year-old fifth grader named August Pullman, a.k.a. Augie, who has a severe
facial deformity.
The voice throughout the novel is Augie and his journey from
homeschooling to the mainstream school, Beecher Prep. The book introduces us to
the Pullman family: August Pullman (the hero), Nate Pullman (Augie's Dad),
Isabel Pullman (Augie's Mom and homeschool teacher), Olivia Pullman (Augie's
sister), and Daisy (Augie's pet).
There are a bunch of Augie's friends from his childhood
days, but the book revolves around Augie's classmates, Jack Will, Julian,
Charlotte, and Summer, the Pullman family, and Olivia's friends Justin, and
Miranda.
Augie's School Experience
Augie's experience with his classmates during the earlier
days of school was not great, he was either avoided or bullied by his
classmates. Augie shows interest in Science and Jack Will joins Augie in the
school science fest and they both win the first prize. Augie’s kind natured, strength, and
patience help him to befriend many in his class who recognize him for who he
truly is beyond his appearance.
The book also mentions characters like Mr. Browne - Augie’s
class teacher, and Mr. Tushman - Beecher Prep School Principal, who help
Augie in his school journey when he struggles to fit in and make friends.
The book insists on valuable qualities like empathy,
kindness, and acceptance.
Wonder is R.J. Palacio’s first novel, and her writing style
keeps the reader engaged and easy to follow. The book can be enjoyed by both
adults and kids. Gift your child this Wonder and see them enjoy this book.
